The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is the UAE’S first national park. It was established in 2002 and is home to many different animals and plants. Visitors can tour the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve with an approved tour company or can stay at the Al Maha Desert Resort, located on the reserve.

Conservation growth and sustainability at the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

Through the research and work of the conservation team, populations of plant and animal species at the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve have grown. The reserve initially started out with 70 endangered Oryx re-introduced to the area. Today, there are over 400 Oryx at the reserve. Also, in 2003 there were 60 reported bird species at the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. Currently there are over 126 bird species recorded in the area.

The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve takes the following measures to promote sustainability:

• Using solar power to pump water out of water holes
• Recycling waste at all campsites
• Allowing four pre-approved tour operators to conduct tours of the reserve only on designated areas
• Allowing a daily limit of visitors per day on the reserve
• Training wildlife safari guides about desert excursions
• Conducting research at the reserve

Al Maha Desert Resort at the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve
