The Dubai World Islands

The Dubai World Islands Overview

The World Islands in Dubai will be 300 small artificial islands shaped like the world map, which will eventually include: private homes, resorts, estate homes and community islands. The World Islands are located 4 kilometers/2.5 miles off the coast of Dubai in the Persian Gulf. The islands will range from 250,000 to 900,000 square feet/23,226 to 83,613 square meters in size. Surrounding the islands will be an oval breakwater.

Construction of The World Islands began in 2003, but due to the financial crises the project came to a halt in 2008. There have been various reports about project difficulties with The World Islands, including that they may be sinking. Nakheel, the developer of The World Islands, denied that these claims were true.

Currently “The Heart of Europe” project on The World Islands is well underway. This project is a cluster of six islands representing: Main Europe, Monaco, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and St. Petersburg. To reach the islands, visitors must take a boat, seaplane or helicopter. All six islands will be connected via bridges, and will be able to accommodate up to 15,000 people.  This area of The World Islands will include luxury resorts, restaurants and state of the art villas called ‘Floating Seahorses’. The project is set to have its grand opening in 2020.
