Dubai sport events overview
Dubai is home to several world class sport events. Each year these events draw crowds from the UAE and beyond who are all gathered to watch the top sport professionals in action. Here is a list of some of the main sporting events in Dubai, most of which occur annually.
The Rugby 7s is an annual rugby event showcasing international rugby teams. The three-day event is held at The Sevens Stadium and features seven players playing for seven minutes each half. The Rugby 7s also is home to The Rugby Village which provides entertainment and exhibitions for spectators. For the kids, there are bouncy castles, face painting and other activities.
Emirates Twenty20 is a cricket tournament that takes place at The Seven Stadium in Dubai. The tournament is a great place for cricket fans to watch and meet players from around the world. Besides the cricket tournament, there are plenty of other activities to do at the Emirates Twenty20 event including bouncy castles for children and English teas for adults.
Standard Chartered Marathon
Another annual event in Dubai is the Standard Chartered Marathon. The event has three distances ranging in length that accommodate all levels of runners. The marathon is 42.195 km/26.219 mi long and is the main event. There is also a 10 km/6.21 race as well as a 4 km/2.48 mi “fun run” open to all ages. Prize money for 1st place in the marathon is 200,000 USD.
Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is a professional tennis tournament that takes place annually in February. At the tournament you can watch international players battle for the title. The championship is owned by Dubai Duty Free and is held at The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium in Garhoud.
Dubai World Cup
The Dubai World Cup is the place to see and be seen. The Thoroughbred horse race has been held since 1996 at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. The Dubai World Cup takes place annually on the last Saturday in March. Prizes worth 30 million USD are awarded to the winners of the races.
Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series
The Dubai Polo Gold Cup is held at the Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club. It was founded in 2009 and is a premier polo event. Polo teams from around the world battle to win the title. There are other activities at the event including dancing in the Gold Lounge, a Fashion Show and activities for children.
DP World Tour Championship
The DP World Tour Championship is the final golf tournament of the European Tour Race to Dubai. The event is held at the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Sixty golfers from the European Tour take part in the tournament.
Dubai Desert Classic
The Dubai Desert Classic is another golf tournament held in Dubai on the Majilis course at Emirates Golf Club. The tournament was first held in 1989 and hosts some of the biggest names in golf like Tiger Woods and Ernie Els. The prize pool for the tournament is over two million US dollars.
